Blog Client Test1- moBlog

This is a post from moBlog from my cel phone, an HTC Mogul on the sprint network.

moBlog is a mobile blogging application for Windows Mobile (WM) devices.

Setup

The program’s interface is simple and easy to use. Installation of the client was as straightforward as Windows mobile installations go. I just downloaded the cab file from http://www.box.net/shared/3aos66vwg0 and ran it.
Settin up the blog was just as easy, the program asked me for my login credentials and the blog’s location online and it automatically pulled the blog name, settings, and categories.

Posting
Pressing the new post button will let you add a title, tags and choose a category. From what I can see there is no way to add a new category, which is annoying but not a dealbreaker. Typing sentences and long paragraphs is comfortable and easy. This might say more about the robustness of the Mogul’s full QUERTY keyboard than moBlog itself but I think it is still noteworthy.
Text editing is kep to an absolute minimum with options to italize, bolden, or underline text. It seems to be using HTML tags for these functions which might indicate that further hand coding could expand these options by adding header tags, line breaks, and lists, both ordered and unondered. There is also no spell checking, which might be a dealbreaker depending on the user’s individual skills. I also enjoy the fact that it’s a program independent of the web browser. In a Windows Mobile environment there are really two real options for web browsers: IE mobile, and Opera Mobile. The former is simply terrible and the latter although a great browser, is still a memory hog for my tiny 100 megs of system memory, while moBlog seems to be much lighter and responsive.

Media

I added an image, right above this text.  There doesn’t seem to be any FTP options to upload local images but I have hopes that through WordPress it will use the existing image uploader structure to pull the image to the server. EDIT: It did,w00t! I see no similar tools for video or audio, which might be a huge turn-off depending on the nature of your blogging.

Conclusion
moBlog is a robust little tool which seems very adept for short posts or as a last resort when an alternative is unavailabe. I’d rather use the tools on my desktop and directly through wordpress but this will definitely do while on the road.
